the use of Lines in visual design

It is much closer to how we see the world where lines are usually the edge of an object. Contrast plays the greatest role in defining lines - contrast between light and dark areas, areas of different colour, texture, shapes etc.

Many images can be read in terms of Points, Lines, Shapes, Cool and Warm colour areas. When we look at our sample image we can read it in terms of points. When we look at our sample image we can read it in terms of lines. We see clear lines running both down the image and across.

The graphic qualities of lines are stronger than points. Like points they establish location within the frame, but they also contain dynamic visual features of direction and movement along their length. Because the frame itself is made up of lines the use of strong lines in an image invites a comparison of angle and length.
