Lloyd was first introduced to the ideas behind mailart around 1987 by Polish artist Andrzej Dudek-Durer. It was from him he gained an insight into the network and connections to a few current projects. For some reason Lloyd was hesitant to begin, and it took another year before he began making and sending work off to these projects. In time catalogues, postcards and a range of other exchanges, including invitations to more projects began
to appear in his post box. There is excitement in the arrival of a strange looking envelope arriving with exotic stamps (both legitimate and illegitimate) from a foreign country they have never stopped since. While engaging in these activities allowed him to exchange and communicate with a wide range of people, it also allowed time to experiment with ideas materials etc. in a way he had not
before. He began sharing the invitations with others, turning them on
to a means of working, a network that stood outside the public institutions that often frustrated them. |
