Codes of Survival - a series of combination Photographs/photograms on the Subantarctic Islands of New Zealand - 1993 - © Lloyd Godman

Introduction
Codes of Survival is a project by Lloyd Godman based on New Zealand's subantarctic islands and in particular the Auckland Islands. These islands lie in the great southern ocean between
New Zealand and the Antarctic continent, in the wild ocean  waters swept by  constant winds  and squalls.

On Enderby Subantarctic species like Anisotimy grow only on the furthermost reaches of sea cliffs where the cows and rabbits can not reach them.  To help shipwrecked sailors during the second half of the 19th Century, Cattle and Rabbits were released on to Enderby Island. During the 1990s these have been shot out to allow the natural vegetation to regenerate. Goats, and pigs were also released onto the Main Auckland Island which have also been shot out, while rabbits were released onto Rose Islands. While photographing on  range of islands during the expedition Godman experienced the difference in vegetation. On islands with no introduced animals, there were lush patches of some plants that only existed as isolated plants on unreachable cliffs where the animals had been introduced.

During 1989 Godman was involved in instigating a project that saw 11 artists visit these islands to experience the unique environment, and create a series of works that toured New Zealand from 1990 -92. Codes of  Survival is Godman's contribution to this project and involved combination photographs photograms, 40 short stories, an installation and music by Peter Adams.
