Native distribution and habitat: As a species, it is common known as the fescue air-plant. It is a species of Tillandsia native to the Greater Antilles, Mexico, the Cayman Islands, Florida and Central America, at altitudes from 50 m to 1,000 m.
Growth habit: T. festucoides forms a grass like clump similar to T. juncea but the
leaves have more saturated colour of green and red. At maturity the plant is
about 250 mm to 450 mm high.
Foliage: The leaves are long, thin and grass like.
Flowers: The erect, digitate inflorescence is slender with a red scape. It produces
tubular flowers with purple petals. Dale W. Jenkins of the Sarasota Bromeliad
Society suggests the species is delicate with death or severe damage at
temperatures below -3 °c for several hours.
