Genus: Tillandsia
Sub-Genus:
Native distribution: Tillandsia punctulata is an epiphytic plant, found growing in a wide area from Southern Mexico to Panama at elevations of 1,000 to 8,500 feet in cool, shady, windy and moist areas
Habit: The plant forms a tussock like structure with thirteen to forty soft, narrow, bluish green leaves, 6 to 9 inches long, dark chocolate at the base, that forms a dense, clumpy rosette. The 300 cm long flower spike is covered with shinning, scarlet bracts and topped by one to three cone shaped spikes. The plant is stoloniferous producing pups on thick stems.
Foliage:
Flowers: The unusual tubular flowers have bright yellow anthers and the colour of the inflorescence lasts nearly a year.
Seed:
Pups:
Cultivation:
Fertilization: A mist every week with Epiphyites Delight or Epsom salts during the growing season will help the plant.
( Epiphyte’s Delight fertilizer was developed for a special reason. Nitrogen promotes foliar growth. If you have Tillandsias, Orchids, or other epiphytes and you feed them, take a look at the nitrogen content. If it’s high in urea, the plants can’t use it because the urea needs a bacteria in soil to break it down into ammonia and nitrates. Since the epiphytes don’t have any soil they can’t break down the urea. It was for this reason that we had Epiphyte’s Delight formulated. It contains only ammoniacal and nitrate nitrogen which is immediately accessible and usable by the plants.)
