epiphyte: An airplant; a plant growing on another or on some object as a means of support only and deriving its needed moisture and nutriments from the air. It is not a parasite

Many Bromeliads grow as epiphytes in nature and can established on a tree or other structure by fixing with wire, plastic ties or string. Over a period of years they will produce hold fast roots that attach to the tree, but do not penetrate the epidermis of the host.
