Moturata (Taieri
Island) Summer Solstice Journey - Lloyd Godman
-26-12-1999
this was the fourth Summer Solstice Journey -
initially the camera was positioned in a single location and each frame followed the sun across the sky until the rock arch was in the centre of the frame. At this point I followed the
sun through the arch and around the island until it set behind
the horizonl. As a sanctuary, Motorata is a nest site for blue penguins, royal spoon bills, black back gulls and other fauna. The gulls constantly circle the sky above the island and feature in most frames, often as small black dots in the sky.

This
journey had many difficulties with the sun playing hide and seek
often hiding behind the clouds and only appearing as a ghost for
short times. Occasional rain showers swept the island and once
interrupted the journey for up to an hour while I hid in a cave
for shelter. Sometimes the camera lens was covered with small
drops of rain.
In
terms of the photography there were also difficulties, I was give
the wrong film stock (400 asa instead of 100) from the shop and
had shot two rolls before I realized this. These rolls had to
have the processing adjusted, also my light meter broke down and
I had to guess the exposures.
