Chrystalls Beach Journey - 2000 - Summer Solstice Journeys - a series of photographic journeys - © Lloyd Godman

This Journey was from a relatively static observation position - 46°12'06.84" South - 170°04'51.71 East - on top of the rock

This was the fifth summer solstice sojourn and involved a rotating journey from a relatively stationary position with the camera mounted on a tripod on the top of Cooks Head which is situated half way along Chrystalls Beach, Otago, New Zealand. The camera view point followed the rotation of the rock shadow cast by the sun across the landscape sky and also referenced the movement of the moon as the tide ebbed and flowed.

Cooks Head at dusk  - the journey was undertaken from the top of this monolith

The journey began before the first direct rays of the sun created a shadow on the land and ended in the dusk after the last direct rays of the sun had faded.  Because of the irregular shape of the head and the eccentric nature of the shadow cast across the landscape the compass readings were at times out of synchronism with the actual movement of the sun through the sky.  At times I had some problems with the sun disappearing and the event of no shadow to follow or photograph, and in some cases this happened for nearly 2 hours.  I also had problems with fogging on some some of the film which ruined some of the image sequencing and unsharp images from a fine sea fog that had coated the filter on the lens for the last few frames. Consequently my intention is to return next year and re-enact the journey again.
