Ephemeral Sculpture
at Bridges, Hurstbridge, Melbourne, 2005
I
had always wanted to explore the sup/PORT work further. There was something eerie, threatening about the
chairs and table defying gravity. Their purpose had been subverted
reclaimed by the plants that inhabited the wooden structure. The Ephemeral
Sculpture in Restaurants project instigated and funded by the
Nillumbik Shire Council, in Melbourne provided the stimuli.
It conjured up images of the dinning situation with chairs and
tables laid out for a meal. Five artists were selected to working
in four restaurant environments, an was awarded one of these
opportunities.
Source, consisted of four chairs and a table suspended from a supporting
structure in the grounds of a restaurant. The legs of the table
and chairs were replaced with tree trunks and exposed roots
painted white. Pots with been plants grew on the table during
the period of the installation.
Initially
the idea was to locate the work inside the restaurant, but it
was later decided work in the grounds and despite the difficulties
of suspending the work, this proved to be a more successful
location.
Yering Station Sculpture award
A second version of the work was installed at Yering Station
as part of the 2005 sculpture award.
Burrinja Gallery Survey exhibition.
An interactive version of Source, was installed at Burrinja Gallery for the survey show in 2008. For this installation the tree roots were reconstructed in papier machee.
