Alcantarea, has approximately 20 species and is an offshoot of the much  larger genus Vriesea. Like Vrieseas the leaf edge is smooth with no  spines , the genus is fittingly  named after the 2nd Emperor of Brazil. These are magnificant plants with large wide  stiff leaves and create a spectacular show. As a native to mountains of  Teresópolis near Rio de Janeiro that grows at elevations of about 1,500 metres This  species can withstand relatively cool nights. and full sun.
