Genus - Aechmea : Sub- family - Bromelioideae: Family - Bromeliaceae

Because Aechmeas are adaptable to cultivation they are among the most widely grown of all Bromeliads.

Generally, Aechmeas form large urn shapes or tubular structures that hold reservoirs of water, many are epiphytes that can be adapted to growing in the ground, but they need a free draining soil. The leaves are often heavily marked with silver trichomes which can form in attractive silver bands. They produce colorful blooms that are long lasting, with colourful berries that follow, which contain an sticky jelly that is edible. In all they can keep some form of colour for 9 months. They are found across a huge range of habitats in central and south America. While many are hardy plants and can withstand cooler temperatures and hot dryer conditions others can not tolerate cool conditions.
