Stock
Frames
Frames
can be designed and cut to very specific size to fit any work, however
as framing can be expensive and you might not be able to reuse a specific
frame for another work, there can be some sense in making a set of stock
frames that allow the images to be rotated over a period of time to
exhibit different series of works. While this limits the size and format
of the work to a standard size, it can reduce the financial investment
in framing considerably.
If you
are cutting mats for a 16” X 12” sheet of photographic paper it could
be wise to cut the mat opening slightly smaller to accommodate a sheet
of A3 paper, this way the mat can be serve both functions. As part of
this, stock mats can also be utilized where the mat and frame are reused
for the exhibition of various works. Some collectors also use this method
of rotating work they might have in their collection.
Chose
a frame moulding with a recess, which allows the combined thickness
of glass, mat and backing board to sit level with the top of
the recess. Small stainless steel strips can be screwed onto
the frame to hold the matted work in place. |

The
tension on these strips should allow them to be swing aside
so the mat can be removed and replaced with another work. |
