the use of shapes in visual design

Shapes help to order an image into a recognizable form and with some input, allow the viewer the satisfaction of discovering the structure of the shape. Although there might seem to be an infinite number of shapes there are actually three basic shapes. The rectangle or square, the triangle, and the circle.

All other from trapezoids to ellipses are variations on these and their importance in design relies on their fundamental recognition. Each of the basic shapes is intimately connected, both graphically and expressively, with different lines we have discussed earlier.
