Film Formats

Photographic film is available in a range of formats.

 

35mm roll film. Probably the most popular format of film available

Comes in a wide variety of ISO ratings, and also colour and Black & White

Usually sold in 36 or 24 exposures, but in some cases there is also 12, 20 and 27 exposure available.

 

 

Medium format roll film is commonly called 120 roll film. The 120 refers to the length of the film 1.2. This format can also be purchased as as 220 film which is twice as long 2.2 meters and allows more exposures per roll. While the width of the film is constant, (6cm or 2 1/4inches), the actual format of the image depends upon the camera used to take the images.

It is available in a more limited range of ISO ratings than 35mm film.

Both colour and Black & White are available.

 

 

4x5 sheet film. This film is 4inches X 5inches ( 10.2cm x 21.7cm) and comes in single flat sheets. It us used in view cameras and is able to produces very high quality images.

It is available in both Black & White and colour but there is limited range of ISO.
