Making large Van Dyke brown prints

Step 7:

Develop prints by washing in dark room. This can be done with the room light on. I use troughs and carefully roll the paper through the water. You need to work with strong paper as the weight can be quite considerable, and rip the paper.

Note the unexposed emulsion flowing from the end of the roll into the water. Make sure there is a good flow of water as this emulsion can migrate back to the paper fibres.

Step 8:

Continue washing until the water begins to run clear.

While several sections can be washed at one time make sure each is rotated through the water regularly until developed.
Once the prints are developed immerse in the fixer. Be careful with this part of the process as too long in the fix and the image can begin to bleach out.
After the images are fixed wash each print for at least 20 mins. This can take time and you need to stay with the process, leaving the prints to soak may not provide an adequate wash.
