16 Aug 2007 - Ordered some printmaking paper from the local art shop

23Aug

Checked with the Art Shop and found the order was never recorded. We are looking to find another source for the paper in Valance

28 Aug

We went to Valance to check the fog generator and to get some large sheets of printmaking paper, but returned without either. The paper shop was closed and had moved with no forwarding address on the door.

30 Aug 2007 -

Hélène rang through to locate an art supply shop that had some good paper in stock - this happened to be in Romans not Valance. As Tess and Hélène were looking to come with me to get the paper it was a real coincidence that Romans happens to be the shoe capital of France. The paper took 20 mins to get - the shoes 5 hours.

However I did happen to find this wonderful tile mosaic for a photographer.

31 Aug 2007

Began some preliminary drawings and finished one larger charcoal drawing on the Canson Montval - paper from Romans. The paper is 300gm and has a good surface texture - 50 x 65.

I am looking to continue with the use of charcoal as I did in the Equivalence series on Wilsons Prom and combine this with cyanotype photograms.

1 Sept 2007

Carried out the first cyanotype experiment exposing the photograms, began with an exposure of 15 mins in bright sunlight. I have had to improvise a great deal with a very large sheet of glass that id difficult to carry. Also the water from the garden hose carries a great deal of sediment and the clean water I have to carry by buckets to the processing area.

However the Canson Montval paper is very good and the yellow stain that often accompanies the cyanotype process washes clean easily. The print looks like a mess but has give me some direction to follow.

I am now looking to complete a fine pencil drawing first on the paper, create the cyanotype and then finish with the charcoal drawing later. Also I am simplifying the design of the drawings. I completed 10 drawings and coated these with cyanotype by the afternoon.

2 Sept 2007

Completed the second Cyanotype photogram and charcoal drawing which has worked much better.

3 Sept 2007

Spent the day exposing and developing another 6 cyanotypes. These were left in the sun for extended periods up to 1hr 30 mins.

Cyanotype print after exposue

These had great detail in the leaves after the exposure but much of this disappeared with the development in water.

I suspect the is a transference of moisture from the leaves to the emulsion on the paper which is causing this to happen. Tomorrow I will leave the paper for 30 mins after the exposure before I develop the print.

Also completed another 2 charcoal drawings.
From the 4th of Sept to 11 sept - I continued to make a series of free form cyanotype prints and charcoal drawings.
Check out the gallery of these works
10 Sept. began exploring the space for the cyanotype prints - looking to create some cyanotypes on the columns in the gallery.

Have marked this area and given it 3 concentrated coats of gelatine size.

Began to construct leaf masks that will create the shadow patterns on the wall where the cyanotype emulsion will be painted - need to find a UV lamp to expose this.

Because of time constraints I had to abandon making cyanotypes on the wall and instead placed the leaf sculptures as a permanent feature.
