the use of Shapes in visual design - Archetypal Forms

Because light projects in straight lines it tends to react in a harsh way with objects that have sharp edges, like a cube or pyramid it tends to either light the surface or not.

Dramatic visual effects can be created where one surface is in full light while the other surfaces are in deep shadow.

In terms of light, we might consider there are three effects that a flat plane or surface on one of these forms can have.

Fully lit,

no light,

oblique lighting where the light is just catching across the surface of the form.

also another factor which can come into play and is related to the surface of the material itself, is reflection.
