Photographic
and works on Paper Presentation -
Cost
of Mounting and Framing
Paying
for professional mounting and framing might present work in
an exquisite manner, but it can be hideously expensive and often
many artists look for a compromise between the expense, effectiveness
and aesthetic characteristics. They might look for cheaper ways
of presenting their work or doing much of the framing and matting
themselves. Fully framed work can also be heavy which can be
a factor when it comes to transportation, particularly if an
exhibition needs to be created and freighted long distances
or over seas and permanently framed works occupy larger storage
spaces.
Backboard
mounting
Perhaps
the most simple and cheapest method of mounting prints can be
achieved by printing the photograph onto a sheet of photographic
paper allowing a large white boarder and the print exposed on
the centre of the paper. The paper is then dry mounted on a
piece of foam core exactly the same size. Because there is no
over mat and only the board the print is mounted on the expense
is considerably reduced.
For protection
of the surface of the print, a sheet of clear Mylar (acetate)
can be pined or clipped onto the surface of the work.
Advantages:
- Light weight
- Easily transportable
with no glass to break
- Relatively cheap
Disadvantages:
- Mylar surface is vulnerable
can be scratched.
- Plastic can gain a
static charge and attract dust
- No air gap between
the surface of the work and the Mylar.

Mylar
over the surface of the print can be substituted with a thin
sheet of clear acrylic or even polycarbonate.
