There
are various means of copying slides or transparencies. Some slide
copiers like the Bowens allow an enlarging lens to be attached to
the bellows unit. Because enlarger lenses are ground to give a very
flat field (the negative is on one single plane - not like a landscape
where the subject extends from the foreground to the background)
they provide excellent results for slide coping. As the Bowens unit
uses a flash to expose the film, the color balance is good. One
of the problems with using a copier like this is that the copy can
gain a great deal of contrast. The Bowens unit has a contrast control
unit that can be attached which simultaneously fogs the film to
a small degree which reduces the contrast. These units also have
an exposure meter built in which swings across to read the exposure
of the image.
