the use of Pattern in photographic design

Ordered Pattern

Ordered rows and other geometric structures usually create regular patterns - which can give a sense of total order, regimentation, but at the same time they can become predictable and visually boring. However, while we might have a series of visual items laid out in a perfect grid, variations in colour, form etc. can act to break up the regimented pattern.

Irregular Pattern

Irregular patterns can offer a sense of elements repeating but in a more random manner. However, to form a pattern the objects must still be grouped relatively close together and cover a certain area of the image.

The flowers cerate a pattern against the black ground

Here the pattern of bubbles on the surface of the water is just beginning to lose its definition and become a texture - while the grain in the sand is too fine and we read this as a surface with a fine texture
