Overlapping Form - Perspective

Diminishing Scale

Diminishing scale occurs when there are a line of similar objects positioned from the foreground to the the distance - the largest appears closest and the smallest appears further away. This gives us a means of understanding perspective and the distance between each of these.

So in this image the water lily leaves are larger in the foreground and become smaller towards the background.

In nature elements like leaves have a relative scale, they are all about the same size, but some are larger than others.

In this image we not only have the arching branches as a scale reference but the yellow leaves on the ground.

Again in this image the tree trunks become smaller in the background - so the variation of nature is used to extenuate the effect by placing a larger tree in the foreground and the smaller trees in the background.

In this image the geometric and precise nature of the tiles give a clear reference to scale - there is no variation.
