Diminishing Scale
Diminishing scale
occurs when there are a line of similar objects positioned from the foreground
to the the distance - the largest appears closest and the smallest appears
further away. This gives us a means of understanding perspective and the
distance between each of these.

So in this image the water lily leaves are larger in the foreground and become smaller towards the background. |
|
In nature elements like leaves have a relative scale, they are all about the same size, but some are larger than others.
In this image we not only have the arching branches as a scale reference but the yellow leaves on the ground. |
|
Again in this image the tree trunks become smaller in the background - so the variation of nature is used to extenuate the effect by placing a larger tree in the foreground and the smaller trees in the background. |
|
In this image the geometric and precise nature of the tiles give a clear reference to scale - there is no variation. |
