COMBINATION PHOTOGRAMS - PHOTOGRAPHS

To extend the intrigue, abstraction and aesthetic potential of the photogram, it can be combined with other types of photographic image making exceedingly well. Clich'e-verre, luminograms and chemigrams can be combined a single print.

Photograms can be made where the two sets of objects are exposed onto the paper as separate exposures.

Photograms can be combined with traditional photographs, and a range of other techniques such as double exposure in the camera localized development and polarization are among a few . Photograms can also be used with mixed media, printmaking, photocopies, small 3 dimensional objects etc.

For the Codes of Survival project, I used traditional photographs of the Auckland Islands with a boarder of photograms around the out side. For this I had to make special masks to allow the exposure of the photograph with out effecting the areas where the photogram was created, and then use another set of masks to protect the area where the photograph had been exposed while I exposed the photograms.

The photograph was exposed onto the paper and then developed first by brushing on the developer to process this area, and then the marks on the outside have been created by painting various strength developers onto the paper which was fully exposed to light.

For the Adze to Coda Project, I used a combination of photograph and photogram in a different way, where the silhouette of a tool was embellished with the photogram. Again it was a matter of making the appropriate masks to create the final image.
