Black Backgrounds:

When larger format negs like 4x5 or 8x10  are contact printed onto a larger sheet of paper the image sits on a pitch black background. This effect can be quite dramatic in changing the aesthetic of the image by placing a different emphasis on the tonal relationships of the image. The affect can also be simulated with any format by making two exposures, one for the print and one for the boarder. A card board masks is cut to size and sits over the area where the print from the negative has been exposed  to prevent light reaching it while the total print area is exposed to light.

The found negatives for the When Light turns to Dust work were either 6cm x 6cm or 6 x 13cm. These were laid between to sheets of glass in a 5"x7 " engager and exposed onto the paper. This gave a large area around the outside of the negative where the light projected directly onto the paper producing a rich black boarder on the remain paper surface.
