ADVANCED  ENLARGER STUDIES

Making a choice, which enlarger to use?
When purchasing or selecting an enlarger to use there are several factors that need to be taken into consideration like format etc. But consideration also needs to be given to the on going maintenance and operation of the equipment.
Format
The first real requirement when choosing an enlarger is to choose an enlarger that is capable of making enlargements up to the largest size that you may want to produce. If you are buying an enlarger, it is also not a bad idea, to keep in mind that you may want to add formats to the ones that you normally use and these may be larger than the present system that you use, so an enlarger may have to accept these as well.

Recently, there has been a trend back towards the quality medium and larger formats as many photographers rediscover their beauty and also that one format can not cover all situations. The main consideration is to keep from limiting one's self unduly at the start so that as many prospects as possible can be explored.

There are several factors that should be taken into consideration but are often overlooked in the selection of an enlarger. The most important one to remember is that your camera may have cost a considerable amount and much of that expenditure is in the cost of a lens. It simply does not make sense to buy an "el cheapo" enlarger that can not reproduce equal results and therefore effectively wipes out the quality of your camera.
