Enlarger Illumination

The type of illumination the enlarger head is of paramount importance. The source of the light and the way it is effected by the head of the enlarger has a specific effect on the equalities of the photographic image produced. Illumination needs to be even and uniform across all areas of the negative and there are two components that effect this.

1. The light source itself ( the type of lighting used): In general terms these are broken down into the following:

* tungsten lamp

* quartz-halogen

* fluorescent tube

* electronic flash ( for special applications)

There are quite a few variations of these systems

2. The optical devices used once the light has left the source before it strikes the negative. These might be reflecting mirrors, diffusion screens, white painted walls in side the head or a series of condenser lenses. While there are many variations, in general terms these are broken down into two types:

* diffusion systems

*condenser systems.
