Bellows

This accordion pleated, light-tight unit connects the front and rear standards.  It is flexible, allowing the standards to be moved closer together and farther apart for focusing and for using various camera adjustments and lenses. With monorails, it can often be completely removed to allow a bag bellows or an extended bellows unit to be inserted. It is often locked in place using a similar locking system to that for the lens and ground glass.

It is important to remember that the bellows is used to achieve focusing with the view camera. I once had a student who forgot, and tried to focus by using the lens. He unscrewed the front lens element which fell off hit the ground and broke.
