In the early 1980s, I saw a winter stick - a foregrunner to the snowboard - in a surf magazine and decided to make one - a hugley crude device with no steel rail - and trialled it in the hills of Central Otago, New Zealand - to my knowledge this was the first snowbaord in New Zealand - 1983
