Photographic Syntax- Perspective

Perspective is a more subtle aspect of photographic syntax. A general audience might look at an image and realize that visually there is something different than "normal" about the subject, but not fully understand how.

Perspective is governed by the focal length of the lens used to make the image. Visually the subject can be:

*compressed through long focal length lenses

*presented with normal perspective

* or expanded through the use of wide angle lenses

135mm Lens with 6x6cm format

demonstrates perspective compression where the visual planes appear pushed up against each other. As the audience reads the image via their normal human perspective the vanishing points makes the building seems much shorter and not so high.

40mm Lens with 6x6cm format

demonstrates perspective expansion where the visual planes appear pulled apart from each other. As the audience reads the image via their normal human perspective the vanishing points makes the building seems much longer and higher.
