Focus - Out of Focus

As a complete opposite to the Infinite Sharpness technique, photographers like David Levinthal have experiment with images that have no point in sharp focus. The subject seems to visually vibrate with an energy field around it rather than be defined to one specific spot in the image.

There is a mysterious undefined obscure representation of the subject. It can suggest a spiritual ghostlike reading of the subject. Painters like Monet used the visual nature of this out of focus technique to form the basis of impressionist painting. Negre directly transposed it from photographs into his painting. It can be used to create a more impressionist atmospheric style of image.

Degrees of focus

There is great variation in how the technique can be applied, from small variation in sharpness to extreme out of focus where no object is discernable and the whole image is no more than an atmospheric blur.
