Understanding mounting materials

The use of materials containing acid is a common source of damage to photographs and works paper. Over time, chemically unstable materials used for mounting, framing and storage can seriously destroy a work. These materials include many of the cardboards, tapes, and adhesives used to mount or frame works. While framing is used as a means of presenting work it is often intended as a means of protection, however if not completed properly, it will damage the work.

Nature of mat boards

There is great variation in the quality of mat board and unless this is understood you can end up paying for an inferior product and service that can drastically effect the long term condition of the image.

Cardboard

Cheap cardboards are made from pulped wood fibre, are high in acid content and a range of other chemicals that can attack works on paper.
