Unsharp Masking (USM)

Any one of three different processes that can be used to sharpen image details using photographic, optical or digital methods. Digital USM, completed after a film image is scanned, allows the amount of sharpening to be varied by the operator. USM is routinely applied to scanned images since the nature of the scanning process decreases image sharpness.
