Creating a new file in photoshop

With the mouse, Select file no 1 - new no 2

or this can be achieved with the short cut Control + N - no 3

 

This dialogue box will open with a number of options

the Small black triangle indicates an active box with more options - click on the triangle and the options will open up.

For instance preset gives these sorts of options

 

You can select the physical size of both width and height of the image via Pixels, inches, cm etc.

 

If you begin with a larger physical size you can always reduce it for a desired output like the web etc - but if the image is small and you need to scale the image up then the quality drops back

 

 

Select the resolution -
Colour Mode -
Bit size -
Background
Advanced
Once you have set the desired settings click OK at the top right corner and a new black image will open.
