Contrast

The visual relationship between each tone in a reproduction. If contrast is high, the difference between each tone is sharp and abrupt; if it is low ( sometimes called flat), the distinctions are subtle and nearly imperceptible. The Greek letter g (gamma) represents numerical contrast values, which often are edited with a gamma curve software tool in computer imaging, Curve tools allow high- lights, mid tones and shadows to be adjusted independently of one another.

Lighting is also a means of controlling contrast.
