CCD (Charged - coupled device) The primary type of light sensitive sensor used in desktop scanners and electronic cameras. CCD's are miniture devices consisting of hundreds or thounsands of minute cells containg a photo diode which detects light, and a capacitor which stores an electronic charge. Each cell, called a picture element ( pixel), is charged with electricity proportional to the density od an original image ( or scene). Some CCDs used difficulty distinguishing a full range of tones or small differences between shadow details. CCds used in professional level scanners overcome most of these deficiencies. 22 Megapixel 645 format © Lloyd Godman |
