Blooming

A limitation in some CCD designs that causes pixel level distortions when electrical charges exceed a CCD pixel's storage capacity and spill into adjacent pixels. Severely overexposed highlights may undergo radical colour shifts into the read area of the spectrum. The newest CCD devices use anti blooming circuitry to automatically drain excess charges and eliminate the problem.
