THE NATURE OF COLOUR FILM

Colour film uses these principles to make a series of images on three separate layer within the same emulsion. Although they vary in detail, colour films for general use consist essentially of three emulsions each reacting to one third of the spectrum.

A. The top emulsion is blue sensitive only

B. A coating of yellow filter layer below the first emulsion blue light is prevented from affecting the two other layers. ( these are destroyed in processing).

C. Second emulsion layer usually orthochromatic in character and therefore sensitive to blue and green.

D. The last emulsion layer is a highly red-sensitive panchromatic type.
