Exposure Investigation 3

Fractions or whole seconds?

1. Set the Exposure Mode to M Manual. Hand hold the camera for this experiment and use a normal focal length lens - about 35 - 70mm. shoot at dusk when the light level is reduced and try to find a cityscape with lots of interesting lights.

2. Set the shutter on 1/30 second and arrange the aperture and ISO so as it gives the correct exposure. Take several pictures. Note the shutter reading in the display is 30 with no " beside it.

3. Now set the shutter to 1/2 second and note that the display still has no " beside it. Again arrange the aperture and ISO so as it gives the correct exposure. Take some more images, see how well you can hold it steady without any support.

4.Now set the shutter to 2 sec. Note the 2 in the display window now has the " next to it. Again arrange the aperture and ISO so as it gives the correct exposure and take some more pictures. Try some holding the camera as steady as possible and then some more moving the camera vertically. Try some moving the camera horizontally and then some moving the camera in a gentle circle.

So next time you are working with slow shutter speeds of about 1/2 sec look when the " comes up as you dial the wheel to know you are working with complete seconds.

5. Look at the results in the computer.
