Metallic toning of  B&W photographs

Other Metallic toners

There is a range of other metallic toner recipes that produce an equally wide range of tones and colourations. The permanence and stability of these relates to the nature of the base metal.

  • Nickel  with variations can Produce red to violet toned prints
  • Vanadium Produces green tones of a permanent nature.
  • Uranium yields brown to reddish tones it intensifies the image and the results may prove impermanent.
  • Mercury produces a range of tones from rich warm brown through to black brown.
  • Ferric (iron)  These toner convert the silver image into a brilliant prussian blue ferro-ferriccyanide compound They tend to intensify the image and increase density.
  • Copper  yields tones from warm brown to light red
  • Lead   In lead toning the image is converted into yellow lead chromate 

  • Cobalt gives green tones
