What is a perspective control lens?

These lenses fit on 35mm cameras and allow for some correction of the perspective of parelleal lines in the subject.

A 35mm f/2.8 Perspective Control (PC) Lens in the unshifted position - the knob sticking out of the side of the lens and the aperture and pre-set rings at the front of the lens.
