DX Coding system

Some 35 mm films have a silver and black stripe code painted on the outside of the cassette and are marked DX.

Through a set of electronic contacts in the film compartment of some cameras camera, when the film is inserted this coding band automatically sets the ASA rating of the film on the light metering system  with some cameras.

It is a good idea to not touch these contacts as skin oil can get on the contacts and create enough resistance to give a false reading.

Although helpful in that it is impossible to forget to set the correct ASA of the film, this can become another limiting factor of an automatic camera when a photographer wants to deliberately set the ASA at a different setting, as with pushing or pulling film.
